How to work with Required Practicals: Part 2

One of the  required practicals you need to know is all about temperature changes. But before you start revising – how much do you know about temperatures?

Differences in temperature in the Universe are undeniably enormous. In fact, they range from  a  toasty 3,500,000,000 Kelvin in a supernova to a ridiculously chilly 3 Kelvin in Space!  Put in perspective, our Sun is estimated to have a surface temperature of 5,600 Kelvin.

On the other hand, if something reaches a temperature of absolute zero, it does not have any heat energy at all. This is defined as 0 Kelvin – equivalent to – 273.15 Degrees Celsius!

While here on Earth, the official highest recorded temperature is 56.7 °C, measured in 1913 at Furnace Creek in Death Valley, California. Ground temperature there gets even hotter. Indeed, scientists recorded a measurement of 93.9 °C in 1972 – not much below the boiling temperature of water! At the other extreme, the lowest temperature recorded is -89.2°C, measured at Vostok Station in Antarctica in 1983. Furthermore, Oymyakon in Russia, referred to by some as the coldest permanently inhabited place on the Earth, is home to around 1000 people. Apparently schools will only close there if temperatures dip below -55°C. No snow days for them!!

Try our new guide “How to work with Required Practicals: Part 2”. It focuses on Chemistry practicals needed for Paper 1 (AQA).
It includes:

Making Salts, Electrolysis and Temperature Changes.

You will find a brief description of what you need to know about each practical, and key questions you may be asked. As always there are questions to try, and answers to check your understanding.
